Ball bearings are used to reduce frictions in fishing reels. And you may add more casting distance by reducing friction, especially around spools of bait casting reels. There are a few types of bearings and please understand them well before you invest in expensive products. Size: inner D. x outer D. x thickness in mm.
Stainless steel bearings are the standard product, and good enough product for fishing reels. I normally recommend these. Those we deal with are high-quality bearings from Japanese manufacturers, and they conform to Japan Industrial Standard class 0 (JIS-0). The JIS-0 is the equivalent of ABEC rating 3 of USA. They have enough salt-resistance, and they are inexpensive. They have the hardest race surface among these three to last the longest if serviced adequately. Material gets rust if left with salt and water. Anti-rust bearings Called as SA-RB, A-RB, CRBB or HCRP by Shimano, Diawa or ABU. They are more resistant to saltwater than stainless steel, and more suitable for saltwater / blackish water fishing. Metal surface is treated to stand for salt, but it still gets rust left long with salt. |
SIC ceramic bearings Light weight ceramic balls are used to spin the fastest. They are built with the minimum tolerance between balls and races, like ABEC 7, to spin with little wobbling at fast speed. They need very light, clean oil to lubricate. Frequent maintenance after every fishing trip is required. I recommend them for surf casting competitions, and anglers who want to cast the longest.
Micro ball bearings This kind of bearings are assembled with smaller bearings and outer housings, to make spinning part the smallest to remove innertia to accelarate the fastest. For example, Daiwa SV spools employ the assembled bearing, 3x10x4 bearing and 11mm ourter housing. They are suitable for ultra light rigs, but durability will be compromized when used wtih heavy rigs.

For the bearings installed onto spool shafts, you'll need a pin remover to remove. Here is how to replace spool bearing.
