Ball Bearings for fishing reels

Ball bearings are used to reduce frictions in fishing reels. And you may add more casting distance by reducing friction, especially around spools of bait casting reels. There are a few types of bearings and please understand them well before you invest in expensive products. Size: inner D. x outer D. x thickness in mm.

Stainless steel bearings are the standard product, and good enough product for fishing reels. I normally recommend these. Those we deal with are high-quality bearings from Japanese manufacturers, and they conform to Japan Industrial Standard class 0 (JIS-0). The JIS-0 is the equivalent of ABEC rating 3 of USA. They have enough salt-resistance, and they are inexpensive. They have the hardest race surface among these three to last the longest if serviced adequately. Material gets rust if left with salt and water.

Anti-rust bearings Called as SA-RB, A-RB, CRBB or HCRP by Shimano, Diawa or ABU. They are more resistant to saltwater than stainless steel, and more suitable for saltwater / blackish water fishing. Metal surface is treated to stand for salt, but it still gets rust left long with salt.

SIC ceramic bearings Light weight ceramic balls are used to spin the fastest. They are built with the minimum tolerance between balls and races, like ABEC 7, to spin with little wobbling at fast speed. They need very light, clean oil to lubricate. Frequent maintenance after every fishing trip is required. I recommend them for surf casting competitions, and anglers who want to cast the longest.

Micro ball bearings This kind of bearings are assembled with smaller bearings and outer housings, to make spinning part the smallest to remove innertia to accelarate the fastest. For example, Daiwa SV spools employ the assembled bearing, 3x10x4 bearing and 11mm ourter housing. They are suitable for ultra light rigs, but durability will be compromized when used wtih heavy rigs.

For the bearings installed onto spool shafts, you'll need a pin remover to remove. Here is how to replace spool bearing.

  • Roro Ceramic ball bearings

Super performance bearings for bait casting reels. Bearing balls are made of ceramics to remove weight. Outer and inner laces are made of stainless steel. 3 models are listed, Red BFS 1-10g, Red BFS 1-15g and Silver Regular bearings. Red BFS bearings are assembled with small bearings with red aluminum collar to remove weight from inner spinning part. Due to the small bearing installed, suitable casting weights are limited to 10g for Red BFS. Silver Regular models are simple ceramic ball bearings without red housing.

  • High precision stainless steel ball bearings (JIS-0) Japan  High quality ball bearings, great enough for reels

High quality stainless steel ball bearings from Japanese manufacturers (NMB, NSK), comparable to those on Shimano and Daiwa reels. These have the more durable races than Anti-rust bearings. So, for reels to be used in freshwater, these should be used for longer life. These ball bearings conform to JIS-0, Japan Industrial Standard Class 0, suitable for high speed spin in fishing reels. "Open" bearings do not have side shields. "Anti-rust" bearings have more salt resistance. "Flanged" bearings have flanges. inner dia x outer dia x thickness (mm)

  • Spool bearing installation service

This is the fee to install bearings onto spools. This service is only for customers who purchase bearing and spool together. Bearings on short shaft model, like Daiwa, Revo (except Gen 1 S and ST) requires to use pin remover, and this service is to do it for you. For long spool shaft reels like Shimanos, you don't have to replace the bearing on the shaft because it is not related to casting performances. It is to support shaft in case very large load is applied. For those reels please replace the two bearings at the both ends of spool shafts.
