Modification, tuning up: ABU Ambassadeur 1500-6500 reels
Basics: Remove friction, install lighter spool, period.
I've been a keen fan of classic ABU Ambassadeur 2500C reels for freshwater fishing. I've modified my reel with some B-Trap, Avail parts, and enjoy performances similar to recent Shimano or Daiwa's. Recent years I do a lot of bobber fishing from banks with 5.3m rod and ABU 6500CS Rocket. Now I walk along the similar "try and error" process with the reel as I did with the 2500C. It is easy to obtain the latest "performance" by purchasing low-profile reels, but I will love these classic reels. Here are some tips for the classic lovers.
<1500C and 2500C>
These small reels are quite popular for freshwater bass and trout fishing. Level winder is engaged, and it has a lot of friction. Spool bearings are large, and they have relatively large frictions than smaller bearings. Spool is relatively heavy. These points are to be improved.

<4600C and 5600C>
These middle-sized reels are quite popular for freshwater bass and inshore fishing. Level winder is engaged, and it has a lot of friction. Spool weight is well balanced, but lighter spools improve performance. Spool bearings are small and frictions at them are not much large.

<6500C, CS Rocket>
This large sized reel suites best for large freshwater games like pikes, snakehead, walleyes and for surf casting. Engaged level winder has a lot of frictions to be removed. Shallow tuning spool is offered to cast light rigs. None-level widner model, CT is popular among tournament casters, but it is not much easy to use in actual fishing. Therefore, modifying level winder 6500 is quite popular.

It is good for lighter rigs than 1oz. For 3oz rigs, you'll need well balancd genuine spool. Dimpled spools are the best. |
